Home Skinovations Ltd., an Israeli home-use aesthetic device company founded in 2006, has received FDA clearance for Silk’n, a device which allows home-based removal of unwanted hair under the direction of a physician. Powered by the company’s patent-pending proprietary Home Pulsed Light (HPL) technology, the Silk’n was shown in a multi-center study to remove 50% of hair count on average with users reporting no adverse effects and an “extremely high level of satisfaction”, according to the company’s press release.
Thomas Goslau, VP of Marketing and Sales said Silk’n “is poised to significantly alter the manner in which physicians and home-based patients treat and manage hair removal results”…“As a physician-directed device, Silk’n will enable physicians to maintain and even maximize their share of one of the most highly requested aesthetic procedures in the US today, all the while offering their patients the convenience and comfort of carrying out hair removal treatments in the comfort of their own homes.”
Home Skinovations will launch Silk’n in the U.S. at the 2008 American Society of Laser Medicine & Surgery (ASLMS)
annual meeting under the strong endorsement of Dr. Tina Alster, an internationally acclaimed dermatological laser specialist. “In the clinical studies I conducted with Silk’n”, she says, “I was impressed with the device’s efficacy, safety and ease of use. I look forward to offering Silk’n as an essential component of my hair removal practice.”

The flash of high intensity light penetrated through the epidermis, is absorbed and assimilated in the hair bulbous region, and acts as inhibitor to the hair follicle through temporarily temperature rise and agglutination. Due to the concentration of the intense pulsed light energy there is no need to overload the skin with excessive energy like in many other systems. This makes the treatment efficient but at the same time painless to the skin. There may be other applications too.. like acne reduction.
